Creative HT Charging

Like it or not, we seem to live in a USB powered world, seemingly by accident. I don't think it was ever intended for USB to become a power source when it was first being developed.

Before I knew it I realized I was carrying a USB-C smart phone, Micro-USB tablet, Micro-USB fold out bluetooth keyboard, usb rechargeable wireless headphones, along with a USB power bank, and a cheapo little 2 watt Baofeng UV3. The main reason it was my daily carry was it's tiny size and ability to charge off USB with a custom cable it came with, no annoying Baofeng cradle to tote around.

Wanting a daily carry HT with more features I got an Icom ID-51A+. Well what good is a powerful 5W HT in an emergency if I can only charge it with wall/mains power, or maybe a car. I work on the peninsula in Redwood City, CA and live on the other side of the San Francisco Bay near Fremont, CA. My biggest worry is an earthquake preventing me from getting home.

So lets talk about a simple project that I made specifically for the ID-51A+ but that can be adapted to almost any HT with a USB power source along with some alternate sources of power like Solar (for USB or 12V) and where they've come in handy.
